Your Questions About Mental Illness Test For Teenagers Online

Sandy asks…

How do I get a diagnosis for a mental illness?

I’m a fourteen year old girl and I live in Sydney.
I may be overreacting, but I’d like to have a test or whatever it is, just to be on the safe side.
I think I may have some sort of mental illness. An anxiety disorder.
But I don’t know how to bring it up with my mum. We’re not the type of family that has mental illnesses and she’ll roll her eyes at me and make me really embarrassed and ignore me.
So, would a school councillor help? If he thought that I had something, would he phone my parents and recommend that I get tested or something?
I may be being a melodramatic teenager, but I’d like to know if there is a reason why I’m so paranoid all the time, why I don’t sleep, why I think every noise is someone trying to break into the house, why I think there’s someone in the room with me, when everyone else is in bed.
I’ve done a few of those crappy online tests, and they say that I have an anxiety disorder. But like I said, they’re crappy online tests.
I feel like such an idiot, and I’ll feel like even more of an idiot if I’m perfectly fine.
